Town Council Visit

15 October 2019

The School Council had a lovely trip on 14th October 2019 to the Newbury Town Hall to meet the Mayor and her fellow Councillors, during their annual celebration of Local Democracy.

The children were able to see the Mayor wearing ceremonial dress and view the very valuable gold and enamel chain of office and the magnificent gold and gilt maces, carefully guarded by a Mace Bearer, also in ceremonial dress. There was a presentation and the children were shown around the Town Hall including the Mayor’s Parlour. The children enjoyed dressing up in the blue robes and hats worn by Town Councillors on ceremonial occasions.

There were Councillors on hand to answer questions and help complete word searches and a quiz as they understood more about the history of our town and the work of the Mayor and Town Council.
